“Mostly Dutch artists, all expressing a Punk attitude. Anger at a broken system, embracing rawness and brutality.”

Brendan Faegre – Echte Mensen (Asko Schönberg, HIIIT, NITE, Club Guy & Roni)

The first song of The Underground, where Will imagines himself to be the lead singer in a band and rages about the stupidity and hypocrisy he sees around him in 'normal' society.

Brendan Faegre – Fuck Song (Asko Schönberg, HIIIT, NITE, Club Guy & Roni)

The last song of The Underground, where a mysterious female voice sings abstractly and the whole cast releases their frustration by screaming '"FUCK!" over and over.

Knalpot – Dierendag

Knalpot was one of the first experimental Dutch bands I heard and loved after moving to The Netherlands. This track captures their punk, minimal aesthetic perfectly, blending equal parts beauty and raw aggression.

Clown Core – Hell

This one has more humor, but at heart it still feels like an expression of Punk ethos. Like a modern-day version of John Zorn's 'Naked City' album.

No Plexus – Enough

Experimental pop expressing anger at society's demands to fit in, sit down, and shut up. Their own description of their music as 'genre-queer' is spot-on.

Yannis Kyriakides, Andy Moor – Today is The Same as Yesterday

Andy Moor is a member of The Ex, one of the original Dutch Punk bands. In this collaboration between him and Yannis Kyriakides, they create a beautiful balance between an anarchic surface and a carefully sculpted body.

Hang Youth – BELASTINGDIENST

Rik van den Bos, the librettist for The Underground, showed me Hang Youth, and said he was listening to it nonstop while writing the script. This is technically more Dutch Punk than anything else on the list, an anthem railing against corruption and capitalism.

Louis Andriessen – De Materie (ASKO|Schönberg, Reinbert de Leeuw)

Louis Andriessen was the original Dutch Punk. Forming collectives, demonstrating against the powers-that-be, making art opposed to capitalism, and demanding the government take artists seriously. I find the opening to De Materie to be one of the most brilliant executions of nothing but repeated chords.
