'Hingabe'
Aart Strootman
Aart Strootman composed and arranged the music for Sounding Bodies’ new project, Hingabe: an immersive musical journey where the past and present converge. Voices sing, whisper, breathe, shout, and fall silent. The music evolves into an ever-expanding vocal and instrumental body: moving from a single voice to choral harmony, and blending live voices with those from a bygone era.
Hin: towards something. Gabe: giving of oneself.
To give oneself to something is not the same as sacrificing oneself. It is an active choice—a personal struggle, an exercise of one’s own freedom. Hingabe is an exploration of the power of the female voice, the nature of attentiveness, and the courage to commit oneself to what one truly values. This is neither a history lesson nor a traditional classical concert; rather, it is an unexpected musical encounter between past and present, posing the enduring question: to what do I wish to dedicate my attention, my love, and my talents?
A musical journey in a monumental chapel
As you move through the former motherhouse of the Alles voor Allen (“Everything for Everyone”) congregation, the lives of the Franciscan Sisters unfold. These were women who dedicated their existence to the congregation, quietly helping to shape the world around them. With deep attentiveness and a focus on others, they contributed to the foundations of the society we live in today.
Jacqueline Hamelink, artistic director of Sounding Bodies, approaches their world with an open mind. Her curiosity has led her to engage with the congregation since 2021. In Hingabe, she carries forward the Sisters’ values by making them tangible—stimulating our senses so that every individual’s body is granted the space to feel which direction it wishes, needs, or is able to take.
