Planctus Cygni by Gerard Beljon, inspired by a medieval Latin poem, blends Western and Eastern musical traditions to explore themes of exile, displacement, and cultural communication.

Planctus Cygni by composer Gerard Beljon is a captivating triptych inspired by an anonymous medieval Latin poem about a swan that loses its way while flying over the sea. As the swan grows tired and fearful of drowning, it eventually reaches land, only to realize it has arrived in a foreign place. The work, a powerful meditation on exile and displacement, draws a poignant parallel to the current refugee crisis in Europe. Beljon blends Western and Eastern musical elements to create a 30-minute score filled with intricate and evocative landscapes, offering a profound exploration of communication and cultural exchange. Featuring soloists, choir, and a dynamic interplay with the audience, Planctus Cygni is a musical reflection on unity in the face of adversity. The composer emphasizes that communication between cultures is essential to solving Europe’s challenges, capturing this message through an innovative and moving composition.
