In KOORD, Jan-Bas Bollen merges his self-developed electronic instrument, the HyperTheremin, with a traditional string quartet. This four-part composition explores the pure essence of string sounds while integrating the theremin’s ethereal, touchless tones. The HyperTheremin is an advanced digital reinvention of the original theremin, first developed by Léon Theremin in 1919. Instead of physical contact, it generates sound using radio waves, allowing for expressive and almost mystical sonic manipulation. Bollen has spent over a decade refining this instrument, describing it as a tool for creating "audiovisual poetry."The string quartet performs a largely graphic score, guided more by textual instructions than conventional notation. Their acoustic resonance intertwines with the HyperTheremin’s expansive sonic textures, creating a rich and immersive soundscape. KOORD serves as a fundamental re-examination of the string quartet’s tonal possibilities, amplified by cutting-edge electronic innovation. Before the premiere, Bollen himself provides an introduction to his groundbreaking instrument.
