Corrie van Binsbergen
The new work based on the Poetry of Antjie Krog by Corrie van Binsbergen features a hybrid ensemble of musicians from Asko|Schönberg, improvising pop singer Beatrice van der Poel, and the South African jazz trio led by Vuma Levin, exploring the powerful connection between language, sound, and music, inspired by the poetry of Antjie Krog.
Commissioned by November Music and Asko|Schönberg, composer Corrie van Binsbergen created a new work based on the poetry of Antjie Krog.“When the meaning of a word bends, begins to shift, and eventually surrenders to sound, from that moment on, the blood craves the enchantment of language—the only truth takes on a skin of sound.” — Antjie KrogPoetry stirs much within Dutch composer/guitarist Corrie van Binsbergen. Since 2003, she has been collaborating with writers and poets. Literature and poetry often form the foundation for the most beautiful music. When Corrie van Binsbergen first heard the South African poet Antjie Krog recite a poem on the radio a few years ago, she was struck motionless. She was overwhelmed by the sound, the diction, the tonal beauty of Afrikaans.Van Binsbergen sought the magical connection between music and language. To achieve this, she assembled a hybrid ensemble consisting of musicians from Asko|Schönberg, improvising pop singer Beatrice van der Poel, and the South African jazz trio led by guitarist Vuma Levin. Together, they explore the far reaches of language and sound, manifesting in spoken word, songs, and arias.Asko|Schönberg Vuma Levin – guitar Benjamin Jephta – bass Jeroen Batterink – drums Beatrice van der Poel – vocals David Kweksilber – clarinet Marieke Schut – oboe Joey Marijs – percussion Koen Kaptijn – trombone Joseph Puglia – violin Lisa Eggen – viola Sebastiaan van Halsema – cello
