for Bello (after Robert Smit)

Pete Harden

for Bello (after Robert Smit) is a whimsical musical response to Robert Smit’s Dog with Red Mouth sculpture, capturing its playful spirit and circular motion through meandering melodies and intricate rhythms, premiered by Orkest de Ereprijs on 17 June 2023 at Museum Arnhem.

The performance of for Bello (after Robert Smit) (2023), composed by Pete Harden, takes inspiration from Robert Smit’s artwork Dog with Red Mouth, a unique and playful gold necklace sculpture displayed at the CODA museum in Apeldoorn. This work, commissioned by Orkest de Ereprijs for their Museum Tour project 2023, brings the mischievous essence of the sculpture to life through music. The piece explores the concept of a musical line that meanders and circles back on itself, much like the twisted golden threads of the poodle-shaped necklace. The composition intertwines rhythmic structures and melodic lines, drawing from the simplicity of Paul Klee’s “Pedagogical Sketchbook,” where a line is taken for a walk. The music ebbs and flows, drawing the audience into a whimsical journey. The premiere took place on 17 June 2023 at Museum Arnhem.
