Movements (2017-18) by Lucas Wiegerink is a deeply expressive composition that blends music with theatrical elements to explore the emotional journey of seeking freedom. Written in close collaboration with the performers, the work unfolds in five distinct movements that reflect an inner struggle for release and transformation. The piece opens with Stuck, where mechanical constraints trap the musicians in a rigid, suffocating framework. As the music evolves, Introspection emerges as a cry of emotional release, filled with both yearning and helplessness. The third movement, Dream and Awaking, brings a hopeful vision of a better, freer world, while Take Off intensifies the desire to escape into this dreamlike realm, building through powerful, mechanical patterns. The work culminates in In Peace, where the performers reach a place of serene stillness and weightlessness. Performed by Doris Hochscheid (cello) and Frans van Ruth (piano), Movements offers a profound musical and emotional experience, exploring themes of struggle, desire, and ultimate tranquility.
