Quatuor Diotima

Bram Kortekaas

In the iconic Willem Twee Toonzaal, Quatuor Diotima gave a captivating performance of contemporary quartet music. For this concert, Dutch composer Bram Kortekaas wrote a new string quartet inspired by current global tensions, titled Allarme enigmatico. The piece explores the contradiction between daily life and global crises, using an enigmatic scale woven throughout the quartet. Diotima also performed Sintonia by Oscar Bianchi, a jubilant work celebrating difference. The program concluded with Schönberg’s Third String Quartet, showcasing his mature twelve-tone technique.

There is no chamber music hall in the Netherlands where string quartet music shines more intensely than in the Willem Twee Toonzaal. This year, a renowned string quartet is once again the guest. Transcending, contemporary quartet music is in the trusted hands of the French Quatuor Diotima. During previous editions of November Music, the quartet already stunned with razor-sharp and intense performances. For the festival, Dutch composer Bram Kortekaas wrote a new string quartet for the virtuoso French musicians. Kortekaas uses a sound language that speaks directly to the heart. He is inspired by political and current events. While the world tumbles from one crisis to another, it is often barely noticeable in daily life: amidst climate alarms and airstrikes, the routines of everyday life take over. This puzzling contradiction is central to the string quartet Allarme enigmatico. The element connecting the quartet members is the enigmatic scale. This unusual scale is woven into the thematic and melodic material of all four players. Bram Kortekaas studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with like-minded composers such as Willem Jeths and Wim Henderickx. In addition, Diotima performed Oscar Bianchi's third string quartet Sintonia (2020). Bianchi excels in graceful, virtuosic music with strong dramatic expression. In his quartet Sintonia, composer Bianchi launches a jubilant tribute to the beauty of difference. According to the composer, embracing difference contributes to meaningful dialogue and ultimately our intellectual and artistic progress.Diotima completed the concert with a true classic from the quartet repertoire: Arnold Schönberg's third string quartet. The quartet, from 1927, showcases a mature Schönberg. His famous twelve-tone technique had already reached full maturity. In the breathtaking, four-movement work, Schönberg masterfully winks at his great predecessor Schubert and classical forms such as the rondo.
