In SAUL, this tragic king succumbs to doubt. He experiences God's selection for kingship as a curse, leaving him isolated in an ultimate battle with himself. The title role of Saul is portrayed by Dirk Roofthooft, a renowned Flemish actor.Musically, there is much to experience in SAUL. The 26-piece David Kweksilber Big Band, the house band of the Amsterdam Bimhuis, provides a rich and dynamic soundtrack. This ensemble, made up of virtuosic musicians with diverse backgrounds—from classical to jazz—delivers an intense, captivating performance. Claron McFadden, the internationally renowned opera singer, contributes her voice as a full-fledged instrument, adding another layer to the music.Composer Boudewijn Tarenskeen drew inspiration from the versatility and improvisational talents of the Big Band, aiming to balance the dramatic power of SAUL with space for the creative freedom of the ensemble.Text by Rob de Graaf Composition by Boudewijn Tarenskeen Directed by Dick Hauser Performed by Dirk Roofthooft Set design and lighting by Johan Vonk Costume design by Sabina Kumeling Costumes by Carmen Schabracq Dramaturgy by Alex Mallems Produced by Theaterproductiehuis Zeelandia
