Settle
Diederik van der Laag
Diederik van der Laag's Settle connects the past and present through a Sephardic melody about a bird searching for a safe place to settle, symbolizing diaspora. The piece, performed by Kamerkoor YOIK, Silke Reijngoud (soloist), and conducted by Raoul Boesten, was recorded at Stadsklooster Utrecht with Cees Oosterhuis handling the audio.
"For a vocal programme that traveled through Andalusian music, I was asked to connect the old with the new: 'Please write something that contains one of the old tunes and use it as a bridge between Medieval Spain and now.'The old Sephardic melody, sung by our soloist, tells of a little bird that's in doubt about where to build a nest. Where will she be safe and nourished? As a metaphor for diaspora, the bird represents a nation looking for a place to safely settle."Composer's Note: "Innovating choir performances as a composer is at the top of my list of priorities. So whenever I get the chance to enter a sandbox mode with a group of singers, I'll grab it with both hands. Thank you, Kamerkoor YOIK, for traveling with me. And therefore, allowing all of us to grow in so many musical ways."Title: SettleComposer: Diederik van der LaagConductor: Raoul BoestenSoloist: Silke ReijngoudWineglass: Marissa HerderEnsemble: Kamerkoor YOIKAudio: Cees OosterhuisVenue: Stadsklooster Utrecht
